Many cars have sensitive in-vehicle monitoring systems which can be affected by the low current draw of an LED replacement globe. A resistor may be required for signalling and headlight globes and the generation I version may also require the CANBUS control module. LED globe resistors and electronic CANBUS modules are sold in pairs.
